This presentation will teach clinicians to identify hernia, advise patients on how to manage their hernia and discuss treatment options based on latest recommendations, including surgical intervention and the usage of mesh.
Learning Objectives of the Presentation:
Use case studies to delineate inguinal, umbilical, incisional and parastomal hernia. Provide advice on the role of imaging in the diagnosis of hernia. Discuss watchful waiting versus surgical treatment. Examine various repair options including mesh usage and open vs minimally invasive approaches.
About Kara Stencel, PA-C, MPH, CAQ-EM
Kara Stencel, PA-C, MPH, CAQ-EM currently practices at the Vanderbilt General Surgery Clinic where she evaluates patients from across the southeastern US who have hernia or who have undergone hernia repair. Prior to this role in the outpatient setting, she worked in an urban Emergency Department in Washington, DC for over 4 years after graduating from the Yale Physician Associate Program. She also has a Master of Public Health from Yale, which focused on Health Policy and built on her previous career as a Congressional Staffer. She is an active member of AAPA, TAPA and PAs in Obesity Medicine. She precepts PA students for South College.

Know when to consult the urology team. Learn how to identify and treat the most common post-operative urologic complications, including urinary retention, urinary tract infections and gross hematuria.

Review the diagnosis and treatment of post- operative urinary retention.Recognize at risk patients for catheter associated urinary tract infection.Identify appropriate gross hematuria work-up in the post-operative patient.Understand when to seek further urologic consultation.

Navigating Advanced Care Planning for the Surgical PA

Tracey Piparo, PA-C has been a Physician Assistant (PA) for over 20 years, graduating from Catholic Medical Centers of NY-Bayley Seton PA Program in 2001. She began her career in Emergency Medicine in central New Jersey, spending nearly 17 years in a level one trauma center where she gathered invaluable knowledge and skills from all of her colleagues. After having her two boys, she transitioned to hospital medicine for a large private group, further expanding and honing her skills and finding a love of Palliative Care. She was a member of the initial cohort of the CSU/Shiley Institute PA Certificate in Palliative and Serious Illness are and now a facilitator for the program. She currently works FT on an inpatient Palliative Care team in NJ and shares knowledge outside of work via social media to support the normalizing of death and dying. She has also spoken nationally to other PAs concerning the importance of advanced care planning and utilizing primary palliative care skills. She hopes to be able to educate people so that they are able to advocate for themselves and loved ones in the face of serious illness.
Tracey has been involved in PA advocacy for over 11 years, holding various positions in the NJ State Society of PAs, including as a past President. She has a passion for legislative involvement while increasing the recognition and advancement of the profession as an integral part of a collaborative healthcare system. She was instrumental in initiating legislation to have PAs be able to complete the POLST in NJ and also during the pandemic was vital to having an executive order signed allowing for PAs to practice unencumbered throughout the state where their services were needed.
She is also currently the outreach chair for PAHPM (PAs in Hospice and Palliative Medicine) and hopes to continue to increase the visibility of PAs in palliative. She lives in Allentown, NJ with her firefighter husband and two growing boys and enjoys family workouts in their garage gym, occasional hikes throughout NJ, visits to the shore, good food and even better wine, as well as a good evening of mindless television.
Tracey grew up in the ED, spent her adolescence as a hospitalist and now enjoys her golden years paracticng Palliative in NJ. Gerald Simons, PA-C
Gerald Simons (Jerry) has been involved in AASPA since he was in PA school. He was involved in the negotiations with the American College of Surgeons allowing PAs to become affiliate members as well as take ATLS and receive a certificate of completion (in the past, PAs took ATLS and were given a letter of attendance). He developed the very successful Pre-PA program and spearheaded the development of AASPAs winter conferences in January, which focused on POCUS training. He currently and Assistant Professor at Stony Brook University and teaches the AASPA fall suturing courses. After decades of in-hospital surgical PA practice, he has transitioned to private practice where he maintains an interest in the gut microbiome, hyperbaric medicine, and challenging wound care cases.
Stephanie Hull, EdS, MMS, PA-C
Stephanie Hull, EdS, MMS, PA-C has been a PA for over 18 years. Her clinical background includes emergency medicine, hospital medicine, and cardiac electrophysiology. She is the founding Program Director for the LMU-Knoxville PA Program in Knoxville, TN, which provides expanded training in surgical sciences to better prepare graduates for entry into surgical and hospital-based practice. She is a Doctor of Medical Science candidate and her research interests include the efficacy of on-boarding methods for new graduates and leadership pathways for PAs in health systems. In her free time, she enjoys hiking the trails of east Tennessee with her husband and sweet dog, Moxie.
Stephanie will present, “Phamacological Management of Abnormal Clotting and Bleeding”. Upon completion of this session participants should be able to explain the mechanisms of abnormal clotting and bleeding and discuss the use of antiplatelet, anticoagulant and fibrinolytic agents in these settings.
Margaret Holland, PA-C
Margaret Holland is a graduate of the George Washington University Physician Assistant Program. She currently practices as a surgical PA in Northern Virginia, in the specialty area of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery. She has a special interest in pediatric congenital cardiac surgery and dreams of one day doing mission work in this field. In addition to being a PA, she is also a registered nurse and has experience as a teacher and academic tutor. She is passionate about working with AASPA's students and PAs, and desires to see them fulfill their dreams in healthcare. She has been involved with AASPA since 2015.
